Deliverable D6.1: Guidelines for the semantic mark-up of business services

Abstract

This deliverable provides methodology and guidelines for semantic modelling, annotation, and mark-up of the business processes and information resources for SPIKE application cases. It defines basic terms, techniques, and approaches related to the semantic modelling. A methodology for design and development of resource ontologies is proposed in a systematic way, based on the user requirements, conceptual models given by implementation platform, and available ontology resources. The process of semantic annotation is described in particular phases. Sample information resources and business processes are identified and presented for each of application cases as data objects, building blocks of future ontology elements.

Executive Summary

This deliverable describes the guidelines for semantic annotation and mark-up of SPIKE business processes and information resources in the scope of the project’s application cases. In particular, it proposes a methodology for the development of an underlying knowledge base and its employment in the process of semantic description of the identified business processes, services, and artefacts.

Chapter 1 gives a brief introduction. Chapter 2 defines the basic terms, techniques, and approaches related to semantic modelling. Furthermore, it describes the principles of business process modelling and semantic annotation and mark-up of particular types of business processes elements. Semantic interoperability of processes and services provided/consumed by partners of business alliances is identified as the main reason for enhancing the elements of business processes with semantic information.

Chapter 3 proposes a methodology for the design and development of resource ontologies that serve as a knowledge base in the process of semantic annotation. The ontology structure, which was initially proposed in [D3.1], is further elaborated in Chapter 3. The resources for development of particular ontologies are identified and a method of semantic modelling driven by user requirements [KliUk07] is presented as a systematic way of creating and customising resource ontologies. Ontology life-cycle management, including the steps of development, administration, and annotation, is presented together with corresponding usecase diagrams and proposed supporting tools.

Semantic annotation is presented in Chapter 4 as a process of migrating information resources into a Semantic Web representation. The phases of a migration project are identified and described in detail. User roles involved in the annotation process and ontology maintenance are proposed together with their respective responsibilities and competencies.

Chapter 5 contains samples of SPIKE information resources with indicated semantic descriptions and enhancements, as they were identified for particular application cases of the

Finally, Chapter 6 summarises the requirements and recommendations for the development of functional components and tools supporting semantic modelling and annotation. In the overall context of the SPIKE project, this deliverable should provide the methodological framework that can be used as a basis for further specification of a toolkit for semantic annotation and mark-up (deliverable D6.2) as well as for the design and development of resource ontologies (deliverable D6.3).

Some of the outcomes of this deliverable will also affect the development of the SPIKE platform components (deliverables D4.1 and D5.1), as well as the design of trials for pilot, project applications (deliverable D9.2). The final, comprehensive methodology of semantic annotation will be included in the methodological guidelines (deliverable D10.2) as a part of the description of the overall SPIKE platform maintenance.
