Executive Summary

SPIKE methodological guideline is a document describing the experiences and best practises for employment of the SPIKE system. It will outline the challenges a networked organisation is facing today and especially focus on those areas where the SPIKE system or similar system built on portal, service bus, semantic and security technologies can bring added value. The methodology contains background information and guidelines for developing applications based on the components of the SPIKE system (in form of a lifecycle process model). The main aim of the methodological guidelines is to make best use of the developed components through:

• Identifying the challenges of cross-organisational information management

• Setting up cross-organisational agreements with the partners involved

• Making use of semantic standards (e.g. ontologies) for semantic mark-up of Web resources

• Leveraging cross-company identity management and federations

Consequently, this framework methodology will ensure that interested parties can discover the full capacities of the SPIKE system, understand the full potential impact the component modeling technology offers, and explore possibilities for commercial deployment. The methodological guidelines will also be available online in a widely used downloadable format.

It is targeted for the following target groups:

• those interested in developing technology solutions based on similar technologies as utilized and developed in SPIKE,

• those interested in further developing SPIKE open source licensed technology, and

• those interested in piloting SPIKE technology.

In addition, the SPIKE project has produced a large amount of research results. This methodology document is giving research organizations suggestions and guidelines on possible future areas that are linked into the SPIKE technology framework.

SPIKE software is on prototype level. Two trial rounds have given experiences in form of application cases, but all employment areas have not yet been tested out side the prototype environment in real world deployments and lack of practical experiences, which is why the project cannot give profound suggestions or recommendations on those areas.
